What is Chondrosarcoma?
Chondrosarcoma is a malignant bone tumor that develops from cartilage cells. It is most commonly found in the hip, pelvis, thigh, arm, and ribs. Chondrosarcoma is the second most common type of primary bone cancer. This tumor, which tends to grow slowly, primarily affects adults and older individuals.
Symptoms of Chondrosarcoma
Chondrosarcoma typically presents itself with a mass and pain in the affected area. The pain does not subside with rest and may increase during the night. A growing mass can cause pressure on the surrounding tissues and lead to bone deformities. You may encounter the following symptoms:
- Growing Mass: A painful, enlarging mass in the affected area.
- Night Pain: Pain that worsens, especially at night.
- Sensation of Pressure: A feeling of pressure or tightness around the mass.
- Limited Movement: Restricted mobility in the joint area.
Diagnostic Methods for Chondrosarcoma
The diagnosis of chondrosarcoma is usually made through imaging techniques such as X-ray, CT (Computed Tomography), and MRI. A definitive diagnosis is obtained by taking a tissue sample via biopsy and performing a pathological examination. Advanced imaging methods, such as PET scans, can also be used to assess the spread of the tumor.
Treatment Methods for Chondrosarcoma
Surgical intervention is the primary treatment for chondrosarcoma. The goal is to completely remove the tumor while preserving the bone structure. In cases of large tumors, additional treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be employed.
Treatment Methods:
- Surgery: Removal of the tumor and reconstruction with healthy tissue.
- Radiotherapy: The use of high-energy radiation to kill or shrink tumor cells.
- Chemotherapy: Drug treatment to prevent the tumor from spreading to other areas.
